Pamela H. Smith is Seth Low Professor of History at Columbia University, and founding Director of the Center for Science and Society and of The Making and Knowing Project. This lecture argues that making is an epistemic activity—a form of knowing—which deserves to be taken seriously as a form of knowledge in its own right.
